After the recent Oscars, a guy friend asked my thoughts on the nude dress singer Ciara wore to the Vanity Fair Oscars party with her husband NFL star Russell Wilson.
It was a crosshatched black gown by Dundas and completely sheer, except for strategically placed coverings of her privates. Many on social media had a lot to say about the dress and seemed shocked that Ciara would wear so little out in public. My friend included.
While sheer dresses were the trend of the night, Ciara's look garnered the most attention and criticism. So she took to TikTok to respond with a cheeky video of her pretending like she was walking a red carpet and wrapped in a white bed sheet with paparazzi calling her name in the background.
Her caption: "Selective outrage."
According to Google trends, Ciara's gown was the most searched look of the night, with searches for 'sheer dress' soaring by 112% worldwide during the ceremony. Celebrity Tattler, a Hollywood gossip site, compiled the Google trends stats and cited other top-searched looks were worn by Eva Longoria in plunging white Art Deco Zuhair Murad dress and Hunter Schafer's bare look, with a feather bra top and silk maxi skirt.
Every few years, naked or sheer dresses are a thing. In 2021, actress Megan Fox attended the MTV Video Music Awards in a completely sheer custom Mugler midi dress with shimmery embroidery, worn with an embellished thong underneath. Fox accessorized with Lorraine Schwartz earrings and Jimmy Choo heels.
Fox has been called the "queen of the naked" dress because she wears different incarnations of sheer attire to fancy affairs. I don't recall her getting as much flack as Ciara.
I didn't see Ciara's look until the next day and initially thought she wore it to the Oscars awards, which would definitely be a misstep. But going nearly naked to the Vanity Fair party seem less offensive. It was a Hollywood party, after all.
Now, it's not the dress I question. I just want to know how she stays so fit.
