It's rare, but not unheard of, for the celebrity gossip rag TMZ enters the surf world chat. Usually, it's celebs caught by paparazzi in "revealing" or "skimpy" swimwear, whilst taking a surf lesson on a tropical vacation. That, or tragedies. The tabloids love that shit. But this time, it's something different.
Apparently, ...Lost Surfboards has sued Lady Gaga over trademark infringement for her use of the "Mayhem" name, mocked up in a similar-looking font to the one seen on the ever-popular surfboards from Matt Biolos and related t-shirts and streetwear, for the singer's new album and merch.
It ain't cheap, either. Gaga could face a $100 million fine. See the side-by-side comparison below:

According to TMZ:
"Lost International is suing Lady Gaga for trademark infringement for her 'Mayhem' album ... claiming they own the rights to the term as used in the surf company's distinctive logo and that Lady Gaga's use is basically identical.
"In the lawsuit, obtained by TMZ, Lost says they've been slapping a stylized version of 'Mayhem' on their surfboards and merch for over a decade ... and Gaga ripped off the design for her latest album."
Gaga, per her lawyer, apparently isn't too concerned with the legal action.
"It's disappointing — but hardly surprising — that someone is now attempting to capitalize on her success with a baseless lawsuit over the name 'Mayhem,'" Orin Snyder, Gaga's lawyer, told TMZ. "This is nothing more than an opportunistic and meritless abuse of the legal system."
Per the complaint:
"Lady Gaga has unilaterally, and without Lost's permission or knowledge, attempted to misappropriate the 'Mayhem' name, trademark, and stylized mark by releasing an album entitled 'Mayhem,' launching a tour with that same name, and selling clothing and accessories with that name."
In terms of numbers, what Gaga facing? The complaint continues:
"For an award of such damages as Lost has sustained in an amount proven at trial, no less than $100,000,000."

Since the early nineties, San Clemente's Matt Biolos has been making surfboards under the "Mayhem" moniker. In the years that followed – through iconic VHS-era videos like What's Really Goin' Wrong (1995), and a slew of influential team riders (Cory Lopez, Christian Fletcher, Chris Ward, etc.) – the ...Lost Surfboards brand has been a massively influential player in surfing.
Still today, the "Mayhem" logo is seen on many top surfers. Last year, Biolos celebrated back-to-back victories on the World Surf League's Championship Tour Shaper Rankings – thanks to his sleds being under the feet of Griffin Colapinto, Caroline Marks, and others. And currently, for the 2025 Championship Tour season, Biolos' boards are still in the top spot. Take that, Gaga?
