After receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress, The Artist's leading lady Bérénice Bejo needs time to let it all sink in.

"I feel like someone has smashed my head and I haven't really realized it yet," Bejo, 35, told PEOPLE from her home in Paris Tuesday afternoon, just hours after the nominations were announced. "It's crazy!"

It was double the pleasure for the charming French actress as her husband, Michel Hazanavicius, nabbed a Best Director nomination for The Artist. His silent black-and-white film received a total of 10 Academy Award nominations.

With all the hugging, kissing, shouts of joy and phones ringing off the hook, one person at the Bejo-Hazanavicius household didn't know what all the fuss was about: the couple's 3½-year-old son, Lucien.

"He doesn't understand what Mommy and Daddy do," she explained. "For him, Michel's work is saying, 'Action!' One time, he came to set [while I was filming a scene] and thought my job was running. He said to me, 'Mommy's work is running.' We haven't talked to him about the truth yet."

In the meantime, the newly-minted Oscar nominees will raise a glass before the clock strikes midnight and it's back to their relatively normal life.

"We'll definitely open a very good bottle of wine â€" my son will have apple juice â€" and everybody is going to be happy. Then we'll wake up at 4 a.m. to give my daughter her bottle," Bejo says of baby Gloria, born in September.

"We go buy diapers and milk. Those things keep us really connected to reality. Then at the same time, critics from all around the world want to talk to us. It's unreal!"

Preparing for the Academy Awards

Luckily, there's one thing the actress doesn't have to worry about: her outfit.

"I already know what I will wear. It's going to be totally different from the Golden Globes," Bejo told PEOPLE. "I had a lot of pressure. It was like, 'Bérénice, you have to pick out your dress,' and I said, 'Well, I don't know if we are going to the Oscars.' [But] I'm not superstitious, so last week I was like, 'Let's go and try on dresses.' "

What can we expect to see on the red carpet? "I can't tell you. It's a surprise," she said with a laugh. "It's like Christmas. You don't want to know until the big day."

One person Bejo hopes to have the chance to chat one-on-one with that evening is Meryl Streep.

"I just adore her," she says. "To me, she's a goddess. I wish I could talk to her for five minutes and tell her how much I love her. I want to see her win the Oscar."
