"American Idol" served up a surprise Thursday night that shook the Fox singing contest to its foundation.
SPOILER ALERT: Jessica Sanchez, one of the best singers this season, was revealed to have received the fewest viewer votes this week. That was a head-scratcher to baffle music lovers everywhere.
Jessica sang to stay in the contest, but the judges went to the stage and cut her off.
"Give me that mike. This is crazy," Jennifer Lopez told Sanchez.
Randy Jackson announced, "We are saving Jessica without any doubt." The judges can use one save a season to reverse the public.
He called Sanchez, who is only 16, "one of the best singers in America. Ever. Are you kidding me? Please, everybody, please vote for the best."
"Idol" had divided up the seven finalists in two groups on the stage without revealing which group was in jeopardy of going. Jessica was grouped with Joshua Ledet, another top singer, and Elise Testone, who closed Wednesday's show. Longtime "Idol" viewers had a good idea that something highly unusual was coming.
Hollie Cavanagh and Phillip Phillips, who were the weakest performers Wednesday, were safe. So were Colton Dixon and Skylar Laine.
"Idol" alumni James Durbin and Jennifer Hudson returned to perform for Thursday's show. They also reminded everyone that they did just fine without winning "Idol."
The seven finalists will perform at 8 p.m. Wednesday on WOFL-Channel 35. Someone will be ejected a week from tonight for sure.
