Jordin Sparks (l.) and Whitney Houston in a scene from 'Sparkle.'
The trailer for Whitney Houstonâs final film debuted on NBCâs âTodayâ show Monday, giving fans a glimpse of the haunting big-screen performance that would be the tragic superstarâs last.
Houston, who died Feb. 11 in a hotel bathtub, delivered both wisecracks and woe in the one-minute sneak peek of âSparkle.â
The TriStar remake of the 1976 Supremes-inspired flick, due to hit theaters in August, marks Houstonâs first return to movie acting in 16 years.
Her role as a struggling single mom to three singing sisters was meant to be the centerpiece of a planned professional resurgence â" a comeback attempt cut short by the cocaine use and heart disease that led to her accidental drowning at age 48.
âI was flooded with emotions as I watched it," âTodayâ co-host Kathie Lee Gifford said. "It reminded me of how much we loved her in âThe Bodyguard,â and in the other films. There's a vulnerability that she had that was â" that really came through the camera.â
Gifford said the movie, starring âAmerican Idolâ champ Jordin Sparks, reminded her of âa young Dream Girls.â
âIt fills you with hope," Gifford said.
âBut it also fills you with loss,â Al Roker chimed in.
âWith loss, it does. But I wasnât thinking that Al. I donât know, maybe some people will,â Gifford said. âShe's still beautiful. And I think we will see a lot of truth in her performance when we watch it.â
