It turns out Kristen Wiig wasnât the only one who had her final Saturday Night Live episode on May 19. After much speculation, Andy Samberg has confirmed that he too left the sketch comedy show after seven years and will not be returning as a cast member next season.
The actor, who joined SNL in 2005, is credited with pioneering the showâs beloved digital shorts segments along with The Lonely Island bandmates and SNL writers Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer.
âItâs an incredibly emotional and strange moment in my life,â Samberg, 33, told the New York Times on Friday. âObviously itâs not a huge shock, but I did officially decide not to come back.â
But will there be more Digital Shorts in the future?
âThatâs the kind of thing that I really do hope happens,â he said, adding that he hopes to one day host SNL if things work out.
âSomething about it just feels like itâs the moment,â Samberg continued to explain about his exit. âMy contractâs up and I did so much more than I ever thought I would ever even do.â
