Earth has a new protector, and he happens to be gay.
DC Comic will reintroduce the original Green Lantern, Alan Scott, to readers in next Wednesdays Earth 2 series, where he will be seen leading a team of heroes in one of the DC Universe's parallel-worlds, Earth 2.
Though the superhero will be openly gay, the book's creators say Scott's sexuality will be just one aspect of a complex character.
"What I really want to do with this character is make the fact that he's gay to be a part of who he is and not to be the one identifying aspect of him," writer James Robinson told USA Today. "And have his humor and his bravery be as much or more a part of him as his sexuality."
Scott first appeared in comics in 1940, and was followed by better-known Green Lanterns such as Hal Jordan (portrayed on screen by Ryan Reynolds last summer). Prior to a universe-wide reboot, he was an older man and had an openly gay son, Obsidian. After the reboot, Robinson saw an opportunity to reimagine Scott as gay.

"The fact that Scott was young now meant Obsidian no longer existed. I thought it was a shame that DC was losing such a positive gay character," Robinson told EW. "I said, 'Why not make Alan Scott gay?' To [DC co-publisher] Dan DiDio’s credit, when I suggested it to him, there wasn’t a moment’s hesitation."
Scott joins a superhero roster in which openly gay characters are becoming more common. DC broke ground in 2006 when it created Batwoman, an openly lesbian character whose books have received two "Outstanding Comic" award from GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation). Marvel announced last week that two gay X-Men would be married in the comics.
