Matthew McConaughey on 'Magic Mike' scene: 'If I don't strip I'm going to ... - OnTheRedCarpet.com

It didn't take much convincing director by Steven Soderbergh to get Matthew McConaughey to sign on for "Magic Mike," but the actor admitted it did take a bit longer to convince himself to take the stage and strip down for the film.

"I got the call from Steven Soderberg, the director, and in 10 minutes after he pitched the story and pitched the character to me I said I was in," McConaughey told OnTehRedCarpet.com host Rachel Smith at the movie's Los Angeles premiere on June 24.

In the movie, McConaughey portrays Dallas, the owner and patriarch of the all-male strip club. Channing Tatum stars as the club's money-maker, "Magic" Mike Martingano, who takes a newcomer nick-named "The Kid" (Alex Pettyfer) under his wing.

The film's stars also include Matt Bomer and "True Blood" actor Joe Manganiello.

"I knew it was going to be quite intimidating but I knew that was going to be the turn on about it. It had an inherent taboo to it," McConaughey said. "Then he [Soderbergh] said, 'It's not written that your character strips in it yet but it would be great if you did.'"

"And I thought of that and I was like oh, I don't need to do that," McConaughey added. "And then very quickly, that same night I was like 'Wait a minute. If I'm going to be in a stripper movie one time in my life and I'm not going to do it for a living in real life, if I don't strip I'm going to regret it. So I've got to go give this a try and make a fool of myself or see what happens.'"

The Texas-born 42-year-old actor recently tied the knot with fiancee Camila Alves. The pair have two children - son Levi, 3, and daughter Vida.

McConaughey, who can be seen in movie stills from the shoot wearing leather pants, a vest and a cowboy hat, said he worked with the film's costume designer to achieve the perfect look for his character.

"The costume designer, Christopher [Peterson], was just outstanding. He and I talked on the phone before getting there," the actor told OnTheRedCarpet. "So we were going for a Jim Morrison meets Malcolm McDowell in 'A Clockwork Orange.' As soon as we found the leather pants we knew we were in. I kept all of it. "

"Magic Mike" hit theaters on June 29, watch the trailer below.
