Never-shy Snoop explained Monday why he's dropping the Dogg tag and taking the name Snoop Lion.
"I've won every accolade you can get in rap; they call me Uncle Snoop in rap," Snoop said during a press event at New York City's famed Miss Lily's, a Jamaican-themed record store and restaurant. "When you're an uncle, it's time to find something new. ... I want to feel like a kid again."
The 40-year-old Snoop, born Calvin Broadus, said that a recent trip to Jamaica was a spiritual awakening and that he feels like the legendary Bob Marley reincarnated. The trip was what inspired him to work with producer Diplo. Under the moniker Major Lazer, Diplo helped provide the soundscape for "Reincarnated," a multimedia project with Vice Magazine that includes a full-length reggae album, feature-length documentary and photo book.
Snoop said he hopes his hard-core rap fans will embrace his creative evolution and give songs like "No Guns Allowed" a chance.
"It's so tragic that people are still doing stupid things with guns," Snoop said. "I could have never made a song called 'No Guns Allowed' because I'm supposed to be a gangster and we supposed to keep one on us at all times. ... But after looking at my life and what it is now and my kids and all the things that go on in life, I feel like it should be no guns allowed."
