STORY: California's city of West Hollywood
has named its first 'Drag Laureate'
Pickle
"Essentially, I'll be promoting the art of drag, promoting the different ways that we can empower drag artists in the community and really connect the people living in West Hollywood to drag and in all those different capacities. So as a form of entertainment, as a form of activism, as a form of community building, there's all sorts of different functions."
Pickle's resume includes performing and activism
She also helped establish the Los Angeles Drag Story Hour
"Honestly, I would hope that people coming to drag story hour take away a sense of play, of imagination, a love for reading. Because before everything, it's a literacy program and I hope that they would really just take away that joy that I have for reading."
The Los Angeles native will serve a two-year term
"I would say that at this particular political moment, when there is such a climate of opposition to queer rights, to art forms like drag, to trans rights, it's so important to have positions like these…"
Pickle will be officially inaugurated on July 16
