Pearl said you could use your fingers to rub around your scalp or invest in a specialized scalp massager.

He recommended the Tangle Teezer Scalp Exfoliator + Massager, $10.99, which is available at Ulta, for this specific process.

He admitted in a video that he prefers The Ultimate Detangler as the only brush he uses in the salon with his clients.

The product is versatile because it works for different hair types and textures.

This step is optional, but Pearl highly recommends it in conjunction with the Tangle Teezer tool.

"Apply a few drops of scalp-friendly oil or serum if desired," he said.

When choosing a product, look for ingredients like argan oil, jojoba oil, or castor oil.

They can nourish the scalp and hair follicles.

The affordable Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Light Scalp & Hair Strengthening Oil, $9.37, has gone viral on TikTok for its hair growth properties.

MASSAGE METHOD

When doing the technique, Pearl said to start at the hairline and then work your way back.

"Start by gently massaging the scalp along the hairline using circular motions with your fingertips or the massager," he explained.

Apply light to moderate pressure as you gradually and gently move toward the crown with circular massage motions.

Be mindful of any discomfort or uncomfortable feeling.

"Ensure you cover the entire scalp, including areas where hair may be thinning," Pearl advised.

He said to focus specifically on problem areas and spend extra time on places where you want to stimulate growth.

"Use your fingertips to apply slightly more pressure in these areas, but still avoid any pain," he added.

"After circular motions, switch to vertical movements, gently lifting and releasing the scalp with your fingertips," Pearl recommended.

He said this helps increase blood circulation and stimulates the hair follicles.

While massaging, Pearl recommended taking deep breaths to "promote relaxation and reduce stress," which is a big contributor to hair loss.

The hairstylist recommended a scalp massage session of five to ten minutes, but "you can adjust based on personal preference and time availability."

Pearl also suggested massaging your scalp at least two to three times per week for optimal results.

"Consistency is key to seeing improvements in hair growth and thickness," he added.

How does scalp massage promote hair growth?

"When it comes to the scalp, massages can help to stimulate blood circulation and stretch the hair follicles to help promote growth, " said FUE Clinics Senior Trichologist Specialist Arran Isherwood to The U.S. Sun.

A 2019 study of 340 participants with Androgenic Alopecia found that 69% of participants reported an improvement in their hair loss from scalp massages.

Elithair founder Dr. Balwi agreed that they were soothing and reduced stress levels.

"While not a standalone solution, regular scalp massages can complement other treatments in managing receding hairlines," Dr. Balwi said.
