FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Fort Lauderdale residents were asked to "shelter in place" following a major gas leak that officials say occurred Thursday night near the city's Harbour Inlet neighborhood.
According to Fort Lauderdale Commissioner Warren Sturman, the Southeast 17th Street bridge was closed east due to a ruptured gas line in the area.
"Both eastbound and westbound traffic are affected and are being rerouted while repairs are made," Fort Lauderdale police wrote in a post on X.
Authorities have issued a warning for residents in Harbor Inlet or Harbor Beach areas to stay indoors until further notice.
Sturman said emergency services responded to the leak and the public is advised to call 911 for emergencies only.
Authorities said It is crucial that drivers avoid attempting to pass through the affected intersection.
The cause of the gas leak remains unclear at this time. The FLPD also asked motorists to "have patience" and find an alternative route.
No other details about the leak were immediately released.
