The tension is rising on BBC's Celebrity Race Across the World, as actor Kola Bokinni and his cousin Mary Ellen could be facing elimination due to a misplaced passport in Uruguay.

As the final couples hit the midway point in their thrilling race from the Amazon to the Andes on tomorrow's episode (September 4) the teams wave goodbye to Sao Paulo, Brazil, setting their sights on the fourth checkpoint in Tigre, Argentina. The fun-loving duo are in for a tough time trying to catch up after finishing last in the recent stage.

With the least amount of money left, they're in dire need to make and save cash as they move. Despite previous setbacks, Kola remains upbeat, insisting, "We finished last but we weren't that far behind so I'm pretty optimistic about this next leg".

But hope quickly fades as not only does a broken down bus hinder their plans of partying at a St Patrick's Day bash in Porto Alegre, but a grave realisation dawns on Kola after he and Mary Ellen take an overnight bus to Punta del Este, where they were supposed to boost their budget with a job. In despair, after realising his mistake, Kola dejectedly tells Mary Ellen, "I left my passport on the bus".

He admits: "I took it out to put the passport back in the case and I just left it on the chair, on my seat". Mary urged Kola, "think about how you're going to get it back". An evidently frazzled Kola replied, "How am I supposed to get it back, I have no phone, I just need some alone time".

Their tension continues to mount when Mary bluntly says, "We haven't really got time for this", to which Kola fires back and says: "What have we got time for then, Mary?"

Mary then says: "Moving on... do you think your passport is just going to levitate towards you?" causing Kola to sharply respond: "I don't need this right now".

Pondering aloud to the camera, Mary mused whether her cousin's celeb status - accustomed to others managing his affairs - might be contributing to his current clumsy predicament. A gutted Kola admitted: "I've no one to blame but myself, it was a silly thing to do, if this is the end of the race, it'll be hard to swallow as we've come so far and it'll be my fault."

The duo, en route to their stint at a wine lodge, clung to the hope of using a landline to reclaim their lost passport. This mishap with their passports could mean they're looking at being barred from Argentina, abruptly truncating their journey on the show.

Race across the World airs Wednesday at 9pm on BBC One.
