According to ABC and the Associated Press, the musician fell from the third floor of a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires on Wednesday evening local time. He was 31 years old and leaves a 7-year-old son named Bear, whom he shares with his ex, Cheryl.

The BBC reported that staff at the hotel made two calls to emergency services shortly before Liam fell to his death. Transcripts from the calls, which were translated and obtained by the BBC, suggest that hotel staff were concerned about "a guest who has had too many drugs and alcohol."

According to People, police are continuing to investigate the exact cause of his death, and an autopsy will be performed.

This morning, Liam's family said in a statement that they're "heartbroken" and will remember him "for his kind, funny and brave soul."

"We are supporting each other the best we can as a family and ask for privacy and space at this awful time," the statement concluded.

Liam first auditioned for The X Factor UK in 2008. However, it was his second appearance on the British talent show in 2010 that catapulted him to global fame after Simon Cowell placed him and four other boys in a band.

As One Direction, Liam, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik became one of the biggest-selling boybands of all time, defining an era of pop culture in the 2010s.

Following the band's split in 2016, Liam navigated some personal difficulties, including struggles with fame and alcohol addiction, which he discussed in interviews. Most recently, his former partner, Maya Henry, publicly addressed their relationship and accused him of repeatedly contacting her and her family.

In a statement shared to the band's official Instagram page, Niall, Harry, Zayn, and Louis said they are "completely devastated" by the loss of their former bandmate and "brother."

"In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say," the statement read. "But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly. The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever."

They concluded: "For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you Liam."
