A 74-year-old moped driver killed in Hollywood collision


HOLLYWOOD — A 74-year-old man was struck and killed by a vehicle while he was riding his moped, according to the Charleston County Coroner's Office.

James Gathers Murphy of Hollywood died Nov. 19 at the scene of the collision, according to the coroner's office.

Sheriff's deputies responded to the intersection of Highway 162 and Salters Hill Road around 10 a.m. Nov. 19. The initial investigation revealed that Murphy was driving on Highway 162 westbound when he went to turn left onto Salters Hill Road, Charleston County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Lexi Douglas said.

When a vehicle began passing Murphy, the two collided, throwing the moped off the roadway, Douglas said.

The other driver stayed on the scene and was cooperative with deputies, Douglas told The Post and Courier.
