Hollywood faces big 'crisis', director sounds alarm

Kleber Mendonça Filho, a Brazilian director, is sounding the alarm over the rise of streaming services in US movie culture. "We're going through a crisis in terms of going to the cinema, but I think with streaming culture and also with the pandemic, the rules were changed," he says at the Marrakech Film Festival. He continues, "It'd always been very clear that to see a film, you would see it in the cinema (…). Well, this is not so clear anymore." "I think this is taking many people away from the cinema-going experience," he notes. The filmmaker adds, "The industry, particularly in Hollywood, really has to draw a line if they want to keep filmgoing alive." The line Kleber refers to is his advice that Hollywood should "only release films on streaming after three or four months." The filmmaker also points to his latest movie, ...

Hollywood Flashback: Hollywood’s First War With D.C.

After advocating for Hollywood's freedom of expression during the McCarthy era, a once-prominent group was recently revived amid renewed concerns of government censorship . In response to the Red Scare, the Committee for the First Amendment was founded in September 1947 by screenwriter Philip Dunne, actress Myrna Loy and filmmakers John Huston and William Wyler. The group pledged support for the creatives known as the Hollywood Ten, who were cited for contempt of Congress after refusing to address the House Un-American Activities Committee about supposed communist affiliations. With membership that included Humphrey Bogart , Katharine Hepburn, Lauren Bacall , Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland, the Committee took out ads in The Hollywood Reporter to detail their nonpartisan agenda. Oct. 27 marks the 78th anniversary of "Hollywood Fights Back," the CFA's first radio broadcast condemning the HUAC hearings. But as industry blacklisting ...

Hollywood news banter

Matt Belloni , editorial director of The Hollywood Reporter, joins Kim Masters to discuss top entertainment news stories of the week. The women behind the #MeToo movement are starting to organize to make sure it lasts for more than just a moment. Part of their efforts include a legal defense fund called Time's Up to help women in blue-collar industries that don't have a platform like Hollywood stars. The winter television critics gathering is underway, and boy was it an awkward time for Dana Walden and Gary Newman, the chairs of Fox Television. The two seemed committed to saying things would be "business as usual" for the next 12-18 months, but after the Disney deal goes through, it's not clear where either of them will be working.

Coogler remembered Boseman as an "incredibly generous" person.  "Even when he knew his days were limited, and his moments were numbered, he still gave to the art form. He still threw himself into the fire," he said. Chadwick Boseman began his career in theatre and television before making the leap to film.  Boseman's most famous character T'Challa/Black Panther was introduced in Captain America: Civil War (2016). Two years later he reprised the role in the hugely successful standalone Black Panther, becoming the first black actor to take the lead in the sprawling Marvel franchise. Boseman died in 2020 at the age of 43 after suffering from colon cancer for four years. The debilitating disease did not keep him from making movies or from fully committing to his craft, Coogler said. "Even though he was going through what he was going through, he would do his own stunts, he would be there for off-camera dialogue readings. It was incredibl e." Viola...

Opinion - Why Hollywood is afraid of Chinese bad guys

Watching Hollywood films and TV shows, you might notice something missing: Chinese bad guys. Even though China is widely acknowledged as the U.S.'s main strategic rival, we rarely see Chinese villains in our contemporary stories. Instead, we are treated to the same old nefarious Russians, Islamic terrorists, trans-national criminals and occasionally a dodgy character from a smaller country.            The reason for this is straightforward: China is a market that Hollywood covets. In 2019, for example, the China Film Administration and box office analytics firms like EntGroup and Box Office Mojo estimated that Hollywood generated  $11 billion  in box office revenue, with big-budget films like "Avengers: Endgame" and "The Lion King" leading the way. Those numbers slumped during the COVID-19 pandemic, but they rebounded to  $7.5 billion  in 2022, the last year somewhat accurate numbers are available. The pandemic, however, is not the only reason revenue is down...
