Sir Paul McCartney once wondered who would still need him when he turned 64. The former Beatle never said anything about turning 70 â€" which he did Monday.

“When I heard last week that it was coming up, I decided to whip something up for him,” artist Peter Max told the Daily News at his studio, where he unveiled portraits of McCartney rendered in his trademark pop art style.

Max’s cosmic characters painted against bold, vibrant landscapes were among the most influential graphic source of the 1960s.

The images of the era of peace and love live on today in the paint-splattered studio cluttered with canvasses of portraits of cultural icons, such as a young Bill Clinton and the Rolling Stones.

Max, 74, feels a kinship with McCartney and the other Beatles that dates back to the band’s psychedelic heyday.

In addition to reflecting the culture of the time like the Beatles did, Max was also on a parallel Eastern spiritual path, getting into yoga and meditation around the same time the Fab Four did.

“The peace and love of the ‘60s is still around in this country,” Max said. “You just have to look a little harder to find it now.”

One of the original portraits will be sent directly to McCartney at his home in the U.K.
